AAP (Animal Advocacy and Protection) is a European animal welfare organization dedicated to the welfare of exotic animals.
For the Specialist team in The Netherlands, AAP is looking for an enthusiastic, behavioural volunteer who will be responsible for conducting behavioural observations with the rescued animals
Are you interested in animal behaviour and animal welfare? Then this might be the volunteer position for you!
Volunteer position: behaviour observation assistant
Are you passionate about animal welfare and fascinated by animal behaviour? Join our team and play an important role in improving the lives of rescued animals. As a volunteer behaviour observation assistant, you will help our team collect valuable behavioural data that supports animal welfare assessments, enrichment planning, rehabilitation, and long-term care. This role primarily focuses on primates but may also involve observing small mammals and other species housed at the rescue centre.
What will you do?
You are responsible for conducting behavioural observations of animals using established observation protocols. You may observe a variety of species, with a primary focus on primates and occasional observations of small mammals and other rescued animals. You follow all safety protocols and maintain appropriate distances from animals at all times. AAP has a hands-off policy so touching and interacting with the animals is not allowed. You will be accountable to the Behaviour team (within the specialist team) and work closely with the Animal Care departments
What are we looking for?
You are currently pursuing or have completed an HBO, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree in a relevant field, or have equivalent education/experience. Good observational skills and attention to detail. Previous experience with animal behaviour studies is welcome but not required; training will be provided. Reliability and commitment to scheduled observation sessions. Flexibility and good communication is key. Comfortable working independently as well as part of a team. You are comfortable working in English, as this is an international environment.
What do we offer in the specialist team?
Experience in animal behaviour monitoring. Opportunities to learn about behavioural research techniques and data collection methods. Experience working with rescued primates and other species. The chance to make a meaningful contribution to the wellbeing of rescued animals. Your observations can make a real difference!

About AAP
AAP (Animal Advocacy and Protection) is a European animal welfare organization dedicated to the welfare of exotic animals. It is our mission to end their suffering by rescuing animals in need and advocate for better laws and regulations.
AAP operates two rescue and rehabilitation facilities, one in Almere (the Netherlands) and one in Villena (Spain). We rescue animals from illegal trade, circuses or private owners and help them recover both mentally and physically. When they are rehabilitated and ready to move on, we find a good place for them with one of our outplacement partners, such as a sanctuary or suitable zoo.
In Almere we have about 100 employees and more than 200 volunteers. We work in a spacious and modern location, in the middle of the green heart of Almere. Our office and facility center are located on the same grounds as our rescued animals. Nowhere else can you see the result of your work so directly!
