Project Lead Pilot Animal Welfare Insights

AAP Animal Advocacy and Protection is a European animal welfare organization dedicated to the welfare of exotic animals.

Over the years AAP increased her impact on the welfare of exotic mammals by focusing on three strategic ambitions; exotic mammals kept as pets, used in entertainment or Barbary macaques who have been victims of illegal trade. To strengthen our evidence-based decision-making, we aim to improve how we measure impact across these strategic ambitions and to broaden our understanding of animal welfare issues within the EU beyond these strategic ambitions. To assess the added value of this work, we intend to set up a three-year pilot. We are therefore looking for a colleague who will be responsible for designing, leading, and delivering this pilot, from the initial set-up through to evaluation.

Do you want to bring AAPs mission in the EU to the next level and improve the welfare of exotic animals? Then this is the job for you!

What will you do?
The project lead will develop, execute and evaluate a plan that realises:
A system that provides an accurate overview of exotic mammal welfare issues in the EU.
A system that scans for emerging trends of impairment of animal welfare relevant to the EU.
A methodology that measures the impact of AAPs current strategic ambitions.
Adequate disclosure of the information for evidence-based strategic decision-making.
A structure of data- and information gathering and disclosure that is efficient and effective.

What does AAP offer?
An inspiring work environment situated in the green heart of Almere, within close reach of Amsterdam and Utrecht.
A workplace near the animals we rescue.
A position with social value and relevance, within an international organization.
A professional workplace that encourages and supports dedication, accessibility and vigorousness.
A temporary position to a maximum of 3 years.
Your salary will be between € 4.343,- and € 6.049,- (periodical 2/3 of salary scale) gross per month (based on 40 hours per week) dependent on relevant work experience, with room for growth within the function.
8% holiday allowance.
A Personal Benefit Budget of 3,5% of the gross annual salary.
24 vacation days per year on a full time basis.
A good and sustainable pension arrangement.
Who are we looking for?
A strong affinity with the mission, values, and objectives of AAP.
A minimum of higher professional education (HBO/Bachelor level) or equivalent working and thinking level.
Proven experience in project leadership and coordination including managing a small project team (1 paid member and possibly several students/volunteers), preferably in a relevant context.
Demonstrable expertise in systematic data collection, analysis, and reporting (including thorough understanding of data quality, ethics, privacy and governance) and in impact-measurement frameworks and Theory of Change models to support strategic decision‑making.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to synthesize complex information and translate it into clear, actionable insights for diverse stakeholders.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and preferably Dutch, with the ability to produce high-quality reports, briefings, and presentations for internal and external audiences.
Solid experience with Microsoft‑based tools commonly used in EU and international NGO settings. Knowledge and experience with AI (CoPilot) is specifically required.
The ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate effectively across disciplines, layers and cultures in an international working environment.
Comfortable with unclarity and building something that does not yet exist.
A hands-on approach: willing to execute operational tasks, while keeping a strategic overview.
A proactive, structured, and results-oriented working style, with a high level of integrity and accountability

About AAP
AAP Animal Advocacy and Protection is a European animal welfare organization dedicated to the welfare of exotic animals. It is our mission to end their suffering by rescuing animals in need and advocate for better laws and regulations.

AAP operates two rescue and rehabilitation facilities, one in Almere (the Netherlands) and one in Villena (Spain). We rescue animals from illegal trade, circuses or private owners and help them recover both mentally and physically. When they are rehabilitated and ready to move on, we find a good place for them with one of our outplacement partners, such as a sanctuary or suitable zoo.

In Almere we have about 100 employees and more than 200 volunteers. We work in a spacious and modern location, in the middle of the green heart of Almere. Our office and facility centre are located on the same grounds as our rescued animals. Nowhere else can you see the result of your work so directly!

In Villena we have 24 employees and 16 volunteers. Our office and facility centre are located on the same grounds as our rescued animals. Nowhere else can you see the result of your work so directly!
